Increased body temperature , whether due to exercise, travel, or high ambient temperatures, causes horses to sweat. The evaporation of sweat helps the horse cool down and regulate its body temperature.

Sweating causes fluid loss , as well as the loss of mineral salts or electrolytes found in sweat.

The key electrolytes are sodium (Na), chloride (Cl), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg). They play important roles in the body, especially in muscle contraction, nervous system function, and maintaining fluid balance around cells.

Potassium is usually found in sufficient amounts in the diet of horses, as most forages such as pasture, hay, and silage contain high levels of potassium.

Sodium and chloride are present in much smaller amounts in feed, and even horses in light work should be given them daily.

Most feed mixes such as pellets and mixes contain some sodium and chloride in the form of salt, but if intake is low, this may not be enough and additional electrolytes will be needed. Similarly, horses working hard, especially in hot or humid conditions, lose larger amounts of electrolytes and water through sweat. The normal daily diet will often not be able to replace these losses, so additional electrolytes will be needed to replace the losses, encourage the horse to drink and promote rehydration, to maintain health and performance.

A horse in moderate work (trotting and galloping) can lose as much as 5-7 liters of fluid and 50-70 g of electrolytes in one hour , and these losses will increase with the intensity or duration of work, and even more so if the weather is hot and humid!

Therefore, maintaining hydration and replacing lost electrolytes is important not only for top sport horses, but for all horses and ponies that sweat after work - from Pony Club competitions or long rides in the summer, all the way to international eventing horses, jumpers and dressage horses!

Since horse sweat contains a higher concentration of sodium and chloride than other body fluids, it is important to provide additional electrolytes in the correct concentrations to maintain the desire to drink. This can help restore fluid balance and replace electrolyte losses, which promotes recovery and ensures continued optimal performance.

This is especially important during long trips or at long-duration exhibitions and competitions , when fatigue increases and performance declines if electrolyte and fluid balance is not restored.
