  • Product description

The function of the immune system is to defend the horse's body against foreign invaders or pathogens that can cause disease or infection, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, foreign proteins or parasites. If the immune system is weakened, it may not be able to effectively fight off these challenges, which can affect the horse's health and performance.

    Stress and the immune system
All horses and ponies face ongoing challenges to their immune systems, and research has shown that stress can also lead to a less effective immune system. Common sources of stress include:

    • Intensive training and competition programs

    • Frequent travel

    • Staying in stables far from home with a large number of other, unknown horses

    • Irregular feeding times

    • Changes in breeding routine

    • Poor diet

    • Breaks in social interactions (new horses entering or leaving the group)

Older or very young horses often have immune systems that are not functioning optimally, which increases the risk of disease in these groups.

The immune system's three main lines of defense:

    Physical barriers

    • Skin, cornea of the eye, and membranes lining the respiratory tract, digestive tract, and reproductive and urinary tracts

    • If these barriers are intact and healthy, they can prevent the entry of many intruders.

    • Additional support is provided by the microbiome - a population of beneficial microorganisms that help destroy intruders, especially in the gut

    Innate (nonspecific) immunity

    • If physical barriers are breached (e.g. bacteria in a skin wound or viruses in the respiratory tract), the immune system recognizes harmful intruders

    • Special cells quickly release chemical messages to trigger an inflammatory response (heat, swelling, pain) and alert the next phase of defense.

    • This nonspecific response does not distinguish between types of invaders, but simply sends white blood cells to the affected area to destroy the invaders.

    Specific (adaptive) immunity

    • After an initial rapid response, a specific reaction to a particular intruder begins.

    • The adaptive immune system "learns" the best way to attack and destroy each pathogen, creating "immunological memory"

    • The next time you encounter the same invader, the specific immune system can send more white blood cells and antibodies to bind to the surface of the bacteria or virus and prevent it from multiplying.

    Immune system support
This entire process can begin in seconds and last for days or even weeks. Targeted nutrition can help support the immune system when it is weakened and promote the healing process.

Emune Solution is a potent blend of herbal ingredients and nutrients designed to support the immune system. Horses and ponies that are ill, especially sick or weak foals, should always receive veterinary attention.
