Stallion fertility is a complex topic in which nutrition plays a key role. Sperm quality directly depends on the selected nutrients, and the best results are achieved by combining different ingredients - like the perfect cocktail.
Here's what makes an ideal nutritional blend for optimal stallion fertility:
1. Fatty acids (PUFAs)
Sperm membranes are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including omega-6 and omega-3. Since horses cannot synthesize these acids themselves, they must obtain them through their diet.
In nature, grazing horses get a balanced ratio of these acids. But when relying on dried hay and concentrates (which tend to be higher in omega-6), omega-3 sources need to be added to maintain sperm balance and health.
2. Antioxidants
High levels of PUFAs make sperm membranes susceptible to oxidative stress. Antioxidants (such as vitamin E, selenium, and plant extracts) neutralize harmful free radicals and protect cells.
The best results are achieved with a combination of antioxidants - for example, vitamin C restores the action of vitamin E, enhancing protection.
3. Amino acids
L-carnitine : Improves sperm motility and protects membranes. It also affects their shape, which is crucial for fertilization.
L-arginine : Increases blood flow in the reproductive organs and helps in sperm production.
4. Mycotoxin remediators
Mycotoxins (present in feed and pasture) can reduce fertility. Broad-spectrum binders (such as Mycosorb) neutralize these toxins and protect the health of the stallion.
